More than 200 naked convicts are on the run in Uganda after they escaped from prison before stripping off and sprinting into the wilderness.
The escapees, who have been described as “hardcore” criminals, abandoned their yellow uniforms to avoid being spotted as they ran into the foothills of Mount Moroto.
Flavia Byekwaso, a spokeswoman for the Ugandan military, has described the area as a “wilderness”.
She also warned that the escaped inmates might raid local homes for clothes.
Ugandan forces are searching for the convicts, who escaped from a jail near barracks in the northeast district of Moroto on Wednesday.
The escapees then broke into an armoury.
Ms Byekwaso said at least three people died in a firefight that broke out during the escape.
More from Uganda
Those who died were a soldier and two of the 219 escapees.
Ms Byekwaso said: “They overpowered the warden who was on duty.”
She added that the inmates are “hardcore” criminals who were jailed for offences relating to cattle theft in the region.
Ms Byekawaso added: “The pursuit is continuing.”
It was not immediately possible to reach prison authorities or local officials.
