Golden Goose Is Betting Big on Getting Weird

Golden Goose has never been particularly fond of the understated approach. The brand built its name on pre-distressed sneakers finished with flourishes like tape appliqués and shiny stars—not exactly the stuff of minimalist fantasies, but a huge hit with folks who appreciate the combination of high-end craftsmanship and a devil-may-care aesthetic. Sneakers like the Super-Star and V-Star have always been rooted in classic shapes, keeping them connected to a sneaker history (and aesthetic) with which we’re all familiar. But GG’s latest, the Space-Star, takes thing to a whole other level.

“With this innovative and original design we want to introduce a new concept in the footwear realm,” says Silvio Campara, CEO of Golden Goose. “It’s timeless, genderless, and crafted to be worn either outdoor or indoor. It’s a shoe with no boundaries.” When you see the shoe, you see what Campara means. It’s like the love child of super-cozy slippers and bulbous, futuristic runners—and it’s certainly not the sort of thing you see every day. That, of course, is by design.

“Space-Star is inspired by and dedicated to people,” Campara continues. “It’s a unique shoe, made to escape from the daily routine and for those special individual moments where you want to ‘Embrace your own Space,’ as the tagline says.” Of course, this being Golden Goose, some core elements and brand DNA are to be expected, namely the pre-distressed look (Campara calls it “lived-in”) that’s defined the company’s smash-hit sneakers since they first broke through in the States.

Will the Space-Star become the next tentpole in the Golden Goose lineup? We’ll have to wait and see. But one thing is pretty clear even now, early in the style’s life: Golden Goose betting big on getting a little weird, and it’s going to be a very interesting ride.
