When it comes to comfy, breezy footwear, Allbirds knows what’s up. The brand launched with its signature wool runners, which use soft merino wool uppers that are so breathable (and odor-resistant) that you don’t even have to wear socks with them. Since then, the line has expanded to include a lightweight, eucalyptus tree-based material called, naturally, Tree. And the company now offers a variety of silhouettes, from high-tops to slip-ons, in addition to the runners. Still, the deal remains the same: You can skip the socks.
But despite that promise, the Obama-approved company did some research and discovered that about half of its customers were wearing socks with its sneakers anyways. Hey, it’s a matter of personal preference; you do you. And since people will keep doing exactly that, Allbirds just decided to expand a bit more and create a collection of socks designed to perfectly complement its footwear.
Made from a material called Trino, which combines merino wool with Allbirds’ Tree fabric, the new socks come in no-show, ankle, and classic crew varieties (called Hiders, Quarters, and Tubers, respectively). They’re thin enough that you can barely tell you’re wearing them, but substantial enough that you won’t be constantly worried that you’re going to wear through them immediately. They feel cool on your feet, they breathe, they wick sweat, and they even resist odor. Essentially, they’re all the best things about Allbirds’ shoes, just in sock form.
If you’re one of those people who can’t stand to go sockless for whatever reason—or if you just prefer having the option to cover up those ankles from time to time—you’re in luck. Summer just got a lot more comfortable.
