Justin Bieber, patron saint of sleaze, has really cleaned up his act for his wedding to Hailey Baldwin. Not the legal one from last year, of course. We have ample evidence of continued sleazitude after the couple legally tied the knot. But for his nuptials at the Montage Palmetto Bluffs in South Carolina, Bieber pulled out all the stops on his way to “Well doesn’t he look like a nice boy?”-ville. Hell, the guy wore boat shoes to his rehearsal dinner.
The next stop on the respectability express for Bieber comes in the form of a watch, which he showed off on Instagram. The timepiece in question is by Swiss luxury brand Audemars Piguet, and it’s a doozy: a Royal Oak reference 5402BA with a yellow gold case and bracelet. Since its debut in 1972, the Royal Oak has become a true icon in the modern watch world, recognizable instantly thanks to its signature octagonal bezel.
While the exact year Bieber’s watch was made isn’t known, we do know that this particular style was produced from 1977 until the early ’80s. That means it’s definitely older than Bieber himself, who was born in 1994.
Another thing we know about Bieber’s watch: It’s a cool-as-hell choice for a wedding present, if you can afford it. There’s currently one listed online for €60,000 (about $65K), though that particular offering may be a bit on the pricey side. The value of vintage watches can fluctuate, but a different 5402BA sold with auction house Phillips in 2017 for HK$325,000, which works out to just under $41,500 at current exchange rates.
Bonus: If you skew a bit sleazy like Justin Bieber, you’ve already got photographic proof that a gold Royal Oak looks great against an armful of tattoos. Which just leaves the (crucial) question of how it looks with tie-dye.
