Development is still in the early stages for the film but the site reports it will follow Denzel Washington’s character Alonzo Harris 10 years before the 2001 original film. The prequel will pick up in the time leading up to the L.A. Riots, caused in part by the Rodney King verdict.

The original Training Day was directed by Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer, Southpaw) from a script by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, Fury) and starred Washington, Ethan Hawke, Eva Mendes, and Scott Glenn with cameos by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Washington won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance with Hawke nominated in the Supporting Actor category. It followed a rookie cop (Hawke) on his first day, working alongside a partner (Washington) who has his fingers is various criminal pies throughout Los Angeles.

A television series based on the feature film was developed at CBS and starred Bill Paxton in one of his final roles. Paxton starred in the crooked cop role in the series similar to Washington’s Harris from the original film. Justin Cornwell, Julie Benz, and Katrina Law co-starred.
