I have long desired to dress like a really good rug. Or maybe grandma’s fanciest couch cushion. There’s just something about those hard-wearing, intricately fabrics that sets the dopamine flowing in my menswear-addled brain. I’ve long known I’m not the only one who feels this way. How else, after all, would I be able to write stories about it, if it weren’t for similarly minded folks on the design side of things, there to make manifest my wildest upholstery style dreams.
The problem is, it doesn’t happen all that often. That means long stretches without so much as a tapestry print to obsess over. But it also means that when good stuff comes along, it’s especially welcome. So, a huge thank you to Todd Snyder and Clarks Originals for entering the fray with their take on the iconic Wallabee.
SHOP CLARKS ORGINALS x TODD SNYDER
The collaborative Wallabees are crafted from one-of-a-kind upholstery fabrics inspired by the Clarks archives. See, way back in the day—1825, to be precise—Clarks was a rug manufacturer. So the company has some roots in the kind of textiles that Todd Snyder wanted to work with, drawn from his own sort of personal archive: the ’70s fabric patterns he remembered from growing up in the midwest, which also featured in his fall/winter 2019 show.
The result is two pairs of Wallabees, one in shades of brown and beige, the other with pops of red, blue, and more set off against an off-white base. Both are made in Italy, and finished with leather laces and that signature crepe sole. They’ll launch in-store on Thursday, December 5, with the remaining pairs going online on Friday, December 6, with a price of $298.
Whichever pair you opt for, they’ll make your feet look like an ornate rug. Or a heavy-duty tapestry. Or, yeah, grandma’s fanciest couch cushion. And that is, without a doubt, a very good thing.
