Exclusive: Kiskaloo Movie Could Be Next for Chris Sanders!

With 20th Century Studios releasing The Call of the Wild on February 21, that film’s director Chris Sanders spoke to ComingSoon.net today and revealed that his next project may be a movie version of his internet comic Kiskaloo!

The comic by the director behind Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon currently consists of 58 strips, the first half of which were published in 2008 and the second half in 2016. You can read them all by clicking here. It follows the adventures of a one-eyed cat named Ogo, a former Hollywood actor who used to play the pet of an attractive middle-class family and ultimately lost his eye at a craft-services table mishap.

“Now that I’m out the other side of this tunnel it’s one of the things I want to do,” Sanders told us about his post-Call of the Wild plans. “Take some time off, go back to writing and drawing on ‘Kiskaloo.’ It certainly is something I want to bring to the screen because I don’t think I have enough time to get the whole thing drawn. (laughs) Like ‘Lilo & Stitch’ the idea is bigger than I imagined. I originally intended ‘Lilo & Stitch’ to be a children’s book, and almost immediately realized the idea was larger than the book would allow it to be, so I had to find another way to get it done. ‘Kiskaloo’ would be the very same situation.”

The character of Ogo was actually originally intended to be a main character in Sanders’ unfinished animated film American Dog (reconceived as the 2008 film Bolt without Sanders), and in an unprecedented situation he was able to get the character BACK from Disney in order to develop it independently.

“After ‘American Dog’ changed directions I had breakfast with John Lasseter and we talked about that character and whether or not I could have that character back,” Sanders explained to us. “They actually officially released that character back to me, which had never been done before. We actually filed paperwork on it. It’s hard for me to reconcile that this character would wind up in a drawer somewhere and never be seen again. To me, it’s a living breathing thing. He said, ‘I totally get that,’ and so we figured it out… And I know exactly who will voice it!”
