“The decision was made after a meeting held this morning by the team with Josip Maria Bartomeu (club president), Dr Jaume Padrós, the president of the Barcelona Medical Association and the head of occupational healthcare at the club, and Dr. Antoni Trilla, the head of epidemiology at hospital clínic.”
Barcelona had been due to play Napoli in the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie but UEFA has postponed next week’s fixtures in that competition and the Europa League.
Their decision comes after a La Liga statement urging clubs to suspend group training sessions in favour of individual ones as a response to the threat of coronavirus is co-ordinated.
The statement said: “We understand that, at these times, the priority is the protection of footballers, coaches, referees and all the staff at clubs and federations that are involved in competitions.
“For this reason, we strongly recommend that clubs also suspend all group training sessions for all their respective teams for as long as there are no competitive games taking place.
“It is our understanding that group training sessions should not continue and we recommend that each club draws up a schedule of individual training regimes for their players.”
