Watches & Wonders, the recently renamed SIHH (or Salon International de l’Haute Horlogerie) is a trade show that once a year features most, if not all, of the best watchmakers in the very-high-end watch game. It is arguably the most private multi-brand event in the watch calendar. Even as a bona fide watch writer you can’t just rock up and buy a ticket—you have to be invited (and mind your Ps and Qs). But in our constantly moving landscape, nothing is for certain anymore.
There were already major shifts afoot in the watch industry in the past two years between the very select Geneva show and the giant Basel watch fair, but these have only been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Both events have been cancelled for 2020, however these rip-tides in the normally staid Swiss watch industry are also creating interesting opportunities for all of us. Starting at the crack of dawn tomorrow, Watches & Wonders is, for first time ever (possibly the only time ever), an online festival of horology that is open to all enthusiasts.
