Germany World Cup winner Franz Beckenbauer dies

German and World Cup football legend Franz Beckenbauer has died aged 78.
Beckenbauer won the World Cup as a player and a manager for Germany and was widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time.

Nicknamed Der Kaiser, he played in the West Germany team that lost in the World Cup final to England in 1966.
He was immortalised in a film made about his life in 2022.
He is one of three men, along with Brazil’s Mario Zagallo, who passed away this month, and France’s Didier Deschamps, to have won the World Cup as a player and as a manager.

A versatile player who started out as a midfielder, Beckenbauer made his name as a central defender.
