The iconic white tutu worn by Sarah Jessica Parker during the opening credits of Sex And The City has sold at auction for $52,000 (£41,000).
The “oyster white tulle three-tier tutu skirt with a matching satin waistband” was sold by auctioneers Julien’s, NBC News, Sky News’ US partner, said on Friday.
No specific date was given for the sale, but NBC said it was “recent”.
The skirt is one of five originals used for the show’s opening credits and Parker, who starred as the show’s lead character, Carrie Bradshaw, still owns one of them.
It became synonymous with the character’s exquisite and eccentric style, yet cost only five dollars, when it was bought by the show’s costume designer, Patricia Field, who spotted it in a bargain bin at a shop in Manhattan’s garment district, Julien’s said.
Parker’s character was meant to wear a spring 1998 Marc Jacobs runway dress that was seen on Kate Moss for the opening credits, but Ms Field preferred a look that defied the fashion trends of the time.
The skirt also makes a special appearance in the Sex And The City movie when Carrie is cleaning out her closet and puts on a fashion show of her past New York City looks for her friends.
Samantha (played by Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) were the judges of whether Carrie should keep or toss the clothing items. The tutu? A unanimous “keep,” Julien’s said.
The HBO show, romantic comedy-drama, created by Darren Star, was based on New York writer Candace Bushnell’s newspaper column and 1996 book anthology of the same name.

It ran for 94 episodes over six seasons after opening in the US in June 1998.
After it closed in 2004, two films, featuring the same characters, were made.
A sequel, And Just Like That…, featuring the four main characters minus Kim Cattrall, began in 2021, after a third film adaptation was cancelled.
Cattrall returned for the second series, which ran last year, and a third season is scheduled in 2025.
