The Best Original Score nominees for the the 2024 Academy Awards are here. Up for the trophy are Ludwig Göransson’s Oppenheimer, Jerskin Fendrix’s Poor Things, Laura Karpman’s American Fiction, John Williams’ Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Robbie Robertson’s Killers of the Flower Moon. The winner will be announced during the annual ceremony in Los Angeles on March 10.
The Poor Things nomination caps a surprise rise to the world stage for Jerskin Fendrix, a fixture of London’s Windmill-based indie scene and collaborator of Black Midi and Black Country, New Road. (He was namechecked in the latter’s song “Track X.”) Robbie Robertson, meanwhile, is being honored posthumously for his work on Killers of the Flower Moon, completed shortly before his death.
In late December, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the shortlists for 10 categories, including Best Original Score. Mica Levi, Mark Ronson, and Joe Hisaishi were among the shortlisted who did not make the final cut. The 2023 Academy Award for Best Original Score went to Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front.
