Billie Eilish, Finneas, perennial nominee Diane Warren, and more have been nominated for Best Original Song at the 2024 Academy Awards. Eilish and Finneas were nominated for “What Was I Made For?,” one of two Barbie songs to get nominated. The other is “I’m Just Ken,” written by nominees Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt and performed by Ryan Gosling.
The Barbie songs were nominated alongside Flamin’ Hot’s “The Fire Inside” (written by Diane Warren and performed by Becky G), American Symphony’s “It Never Went Away” (written by Jon Batiste and Semisonic’s Dan Wilson and performed by Batiste), and Killers of the Flower Moon’s “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (written by Scott George and performed by the Osage Tribal Singers).
In a statement about their nomination, Eilish and Finneas said:
The 2023 Academy Award for Best Original Song went to composer M.M. Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose for “Naatu Naatu” from RRR. In 2022, Billie Eilish and Finneas won the award for the James Bond song “No Time to Die.” The musicians also performed “No Time to Die” at the ceremony.
Earlier this year, Eilish and Finneas won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?” In addition, “I’m Just Ken” won Best Song at the Critics Choice Awards. Both songs are nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
