Taylor Swift has won the 2024 Grammy for Album of the Year for Midnights. It’s her 14th Grammy, and her fourth time triumphing in the category. She previously won Album of the Year in 2021 (for Folklore), 2016 (for 1989), and 2010 (for Fearless). Swift is now the winningest primary artist in the category’s history, breaking a tie she’d previously held with three-time winners Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon, and Stevie Wonder.
“Oh my god. Okay. I get to work with one of my best friends who is not only one of my best friends, but also a once-in-a-generation producer. That’s Jack Antonoff. I’m so lucky. And my engineer, Lauren Sisk,” Swift said upon accepting the award. She went on to thank many others, including Lana Del Rey. “I think so many female artists would not be where they are and would not have the inspiration they have if it weren’t for the work that she’s done,” Swift said to Del Rey. “I think that she’s a legacy artist, a legend in her prime right now. I’m so lucky to know you and to be your friend.”
Swift took home the award over SZA (SOS), Olivia Rodrigo (Guts), Lana Del Rey (Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd), Miley Cyrus (Endless Summer Vacation), Janelle Monáe (The Age of Pleasure), Jon Batiste (World Music Radio), and Boygenius (The Record). She was also nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album (Midnights), Best Pop Solo Performance (“Anti-Hero”), Song of the Year (“Anti-Hero”), and Record of the Year (“Anti-Hero”). She and Ice Spice got nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the New York rapper’s remix of Swift’s “Karma.”
Since releasing Midnights in late 2022, Swift has already shared a new album while still on her massive Eras Tour. She released 1989 (Taylor’s Version)—the latest installment in her series of re-recorded albums—in October of last year, shortly after her Eras Tour film premiered in theaters. She was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2023.
