Tracy Chapman took the stage at the 2024 Grammy Awards tonight to perform her hit “Fast Car” with help from Luke Combs, whose cover last year helped propell her song back to the top of the charts. Both artists opted for a faithful rendition of the original, and the crowd erupted in loud cheers for Chapman as soon as she started singing. Watch it happen below.
Combs is nominated for Best Country Solo Performance for his “Fast Car” cover at tonight’s Grammy Awards. It appears on Gettin’ Old, his fourth album, which came out last year. When Combs’ rendition of “Fast Car” topped the Country Airplay chart, it made Chapman the first Black woman to earn a No. 1 with a solo composition on the country charts. She also became the first Black woman to ever win a Country Music Association Award, taking home the Song of the Year trophy for “Fast Car” at the November 2023 awards thanks to his cover.
Chapman has won four Grammy Awards in the past, three of which were tied to her self-titled album which included “Fast Car” in its tracklist. For that, she won Best Contemporary Folk Album, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Best New Artist in 1989.
