Ryan Gosling took the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to perform his Best Original Song nominee “I’m Just Ken” at the 2024 Academy Awards. He kicked off the Barbie track sitting behind Margot Robbie in the audience, wearing a sparkly hot pink suit and a black cowboy hat. He then climbed a staircase to the pink Oscars stage to join Mark Ronson (on bass, and also in pink), and a throng of backup dancers in black suits and cowboy hats. Check out footage below.
Much like the musical scene in the film, Gosling’s performance featured elaborate choreography, as well as cameos from Barbie co-Kens Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, and for some reason, Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash.
Toward the end of the performance, Gosling returned to the star-studded Oscars crowd, where he proffered his microphone toward Barbie director Greta Gerwig, Robbie, America Ferrera, and Emma Stone, who sang along. The setpiece also included giant vintage Barbie face cutouts and pink fireworks.
“I’m Just Ken” was a surprise standalone hit last year in the wake of Barbie’s sensational, culture-strangling success. It was written and produced by Mark Ronson, like much of the soundtrack, along with Andrew Wyatt. The recording features Slash, Wolfgang Van Halen, and Foo Fighters’ Josh Freese. In December, an EP including Merry Kristmas Barbie and In My Feelings Acoustic versions was released.
