Wilco have announced a new EP called Hot Sun Cool Shroud, and they plan on releasing it just in time for Solid Sound Festival, their recurring event at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, Massachusetts. The EP is out digitally June 28 via dBpm Records. Festival attendees can purchased a unique white vinyl pressing in person and design their own cover art using ink stamps that replicate artist Kathleen Ryan’s designs. Check out the EP tracklist, and an example of the artwork, below.
“It’s fun to have something new to release at Solid Sound,” said Jeff Tweedy. “This year we’re putting out an EP with a summertime-after-dark kind of feeling. It starts off pretty hot, like heat during the day, has some instrumentals on it that are a little agitated and uncomfortable and ends with a cooling breeze. There are tracks on Hot Sun Cool Shroud that are more aggressive and angular than anything we’ve put out in a while, and a song about love melting you like ice cream into a puddle of sugary soup. All the pieces of summer, including the broody cicadas.”
The 2024 Solid Sound lineup includes Wilco, Wednesday, Ratboys, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Soul Glo, Water From Your Eyes, Iris DeMent, and more. Along with those musical performances, Solid Sound will also feature Hrishikesh Hirway’s live presentation of his Song Exploder podcast, John Hodgman’s Comedy Cabaret, live painting from Steve Keene, and pop-up interviews.
In support of their 2023 album, Cousin, Wilco are going on tour this summer, with Leah Senior, Cut Worms, and Katie Cruel opening select dates. The band also recently shared a cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” in honor of the late artist’s 77th birthday.
