Recipients of the 2024 FIA Safe and Sustainable Mobility Grants Programme Announced

The FIA Safe and Sustainable Mobility Grants are supported by the FIA Foundation.

The FIA has announced the recipients of the 2024 Safe and Sustainable Mobility Grants Programme.

An external panel of road safety experts selected 27 projects to receive funding as part of the programme. The selected projects fit into several streams including:

Implementing Regional or Global FIA Programmes for Safe and Sustainable Mobility

This stream focuses on local adaptations to regional or global FIA Mobility initiatives, such as Star Rating 4 Schools, Used Vehicles Programme and the Road Safety Index. Programmes include:

• Star Rating 4 Schools – In Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan Milli Avtomobil Klubu), Botswana (Emergency Assist 991), Chile (Automovil Club De Chile), Peru (Touring Y Automóvil Club Del Peru), the Philippines (Automobile Association Philippines), and Zimbabwe (Automobile Association of Zimbabwe), FIA Members will implement iRap’s SR4S tools to enhance road safety around local schools.
• Helmet safety –  Clubs will also advocate for safe helmet use among two-wheeler users, providing free helmets and safety education. Clubs working in this space include China (Federation Of Automobile And Motorcycle Sports Of People Of China) and Sri Lanka (Automobile Association of Ceylon).
• ‘Drive in the Moment’  tool – The Netherlands’ Koninklijke Nederlandsche Automobiel Club (ANWB) will launch a Dutch version of the ‘Drive in the Moment’ tool.

Supporting National/Local Policies for Safe and Sustainable Mobility

This stream focuses on implementing national road safety strategies, WHO Decade of Action Global Plan measures, and actions to meet national CO2 reduction targets. Programmes include:

• Safe mobility for senior drivers – Slovenia’s AMZS will organize a conference on safe mobility for senior drivers.
• National Active Mobility Plan – Costa Rica’s ACCR will support the National Active Mobility Plan by disseminating its contents and providing capacity building.
• Autodiag risque routier et mobilité – Mobilité Club France will develop a professional road risk self-diagnosis tool to help companies comply with and fulfill their legal obligations.
• Driving Change towards Safe and Sustainable Mobility – Greece’s Hellenic Research and Educational Institute “Panos Mylonas” (RSI) will observe three cities and gather data on speed compliance, safety equipment, and cellphone use while driving. 
• Improving cycling conditions in Portugal – Portugal’s Automovel Club De Portugal will assess cycling infrastructure within a part of Lisbon and facilitate further improvements.
• Empowering Moto Couriers – Turkey’s Türkiye Turing Ve Otomobil Kurumu will educate moto couriers, motorcycle users and B-license drivers who want to ride motorcycles up to 125 cc in road safety values.

Advocacy Events for Safe and Sustainable Mobility

Activities in this stream include workshops with policymakers, awareness days on key mobility issues, and briefings for journalists and media. Activities include:

• Motor vehicle impact on air pollution – Bosnia and Herzegovina’s BIHAMK will research the impact of motor vehicles on air pollution in Sarajevo and present the findings to stakeholders.
• School road safety handbook -The Automobile Association of Singapore will develop a comprehensive school road safety handbook.
• Road safety and sustainable development – EASST will collaborate with Azerbaijani authorities and FIA Member Club on road safety and sustainable development.

Research Projects and Data Collection for Policy Change

The Safe and Sustainable Mobility Grants Programme will also support six Member Clubs in their research projects on the following topics:

• Shared mobility services and micromobility safety – Botswana Motor Sports (BMS) and the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) will investigate shared mobility services and micromobility safety.
• Survey child seat usage – Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) will survey child seat usage and promote safe practices.
• Road safety issues in urban areas – Spain’s Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE) and Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACC) will study road safety issues in urban areas.
• Public opinions survey – Guatemala’s Automóvil Club de Guatemala (ACG) will survey public opinions on road safety.

Youth Engagement in Safe and Sustainable Mobility

This stream focuses on involving young people in mobility initiatives, including:

• Interactive teaching package – Touring Club Belgium (TCB) will create an interactive mobility teaching package for students aged 14-18 and hold a contest for the best future mobility vision.
• Youth perspectives study – Nepal’s Automobiles’ Association (NASA) will study youth perspectives on mobility challenges, conduct workshops, and advocate for policy changes.
• Awareness campaign – Nigeria’s Automobile and Touring Club (ATCN) will raise awareness on road safety and sustainable mobility among the youth, addressing issues like inadequate infrastructure and fossil fuel overuse.

Programmes will be executed against a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework, working to achieve the goals set out in the “Sustainable Mobility For All” strategy.
