Israel’s military is investigating claims dozens of people have been killed in strikes on Gaza – as media reports say they were targeting the mastermind behind the 7 October attack.
Hamas’s media office said at least 100 people were killed or injured in the attack on the city of Khan Younis, which hit tents occupied by displaced people.
The militant group has described the strikes as “a grave escalation” and evidence Israel was not interested in a ceasefire.
Israeli army radio said the target of the attacks was Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, who they described as “very significant”.
In the hours after Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel, Deif appeared in a recorded video message, announcing the beginning of what he called “Operation Al Aqsa Storm”.
