South London artist Ruthven has announced his debut album. Rough & Ready arrives October 25 via Jai and A. K. Paul’s label, Paul Institute, and XL Recordings. Today, Ruthven has shared the LP’s fourth preview, “I Can’t Go There,” along with a music video that he co-directed with his wife, Francesca Nelson. Check it out below.
Ruthven made his Paul Institute debut, in 2017, with the single “Evil.” He’s more recently shared “Don’t Keep It to Yourself,” “123 Days,” and “The Window,” all three of which appear on Rough & Ready. Contributors to the new album include A. K. Paul and Francis Anthony “Eg” White.
The title Rough & Ready is a play on Ruthven’s stage name—which is pronounced “Rough’n.” The artist also pays homage to his tenure playing in a wedding band, stating in a press release that the album is partly influenced by “yacht rock artists like Michael McDonald and Steely Dan,” as well as Prince.
