Josh Tillman has announced his sixth Father John Misty studio album. Mahashmashana lands on November 22 via Sub Pop. Tillman has also shared a song from the album, “Screamland,” and its music video, directed by Estefania Kröl. “The video is a visual journey through the depths of ‘Screamland,’ capturing the essence of both the music and the artists,” Kröl said in a statement. “Father John Misty blends seamlessly into the scene, becoming a part of the city, a living echo of ‘Screamland.’”
Tillman co-produced Mahashmashana with Drew Erickson, who worked across Chloë and the Next 20th Century. Longtime collaborator Jonathan Wilson served as executive producer. In addition, BJ Burton mixed the tracks “Screamland” and “Josh Tillman and the Accidental Dose.”
Mahāśmaśāna (महामशान) is a Sanskrit word meaning “great cremation ground,” a press release notes. The album includes “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All,” the eight-and-a-half-minute track that featured on the recent compilation Greatish Hits: I Followed My Dreams and My Dreams Said to Crawl.
