Hacking Generative AI for Fun and Profit

You hardly need ChatGPT to generate a list of reasons why generative artificial intelligence is often less than awesome. The way algorithms are fed creative work often without permission, harbor nasty biases, and require huge amounts of energy and water for training are all serious issues.

Putting all that aside for a moment, though, it is remarkable how powerful generative AI can be for prototyping potentially useful new tools.

I got to witness this firsthand by visiting Sundai Club, a generative AI hackathon that takes place one Sunday each month near the MIT campus. A few months ago, the group kindly agreed to let me sit in and chose to spend that session exploring tools that might be useful to journalists. The club is backed by a Cambridge nonprofit called Æthos that promotes socially responsible use of AI.

The Sundai Club crew includes students from MIT and Harvard, a few professional developers and product managers, and even one person who works for the military. Each event starts with a brainstorm of possible projects that the group then whittles down to a final option that they actually try to build.

Notable pitches from the journalism hackathon included using multimodal language models to track political posts on TikTok, to auto-generate freedom of information requests and appeals, or to summarize video clips of local court hearings to help with local news coverage.

In the end, the group decided to build a tool that would help reporters covering AI identify potentially interesting papers posted to the Arxiv, a popular server for research paper preprints. It’s likely my presence swayed them here, given that I mentioned at the meeting that scouring the Arxiv for interesting research was a high priority for me.

Something like AI News Hound might help journalists, or perhaps even researchers or VCs, identify promising projects, groups, or individuals to talk to.

Nader Karayanni, a graduate student at MIT and a regular coder at the Sundai Club hackathons, says language models and other generative AI tools make it surprisingly easy to spin up prototype ideas like this one. “The fact we could build that so quickly is amazing,” Karayannie says. “If you’d told me three years ago that we could do this, I would’ve said it is impossible.”

Other prototypes developed by the Sundai Club include an AI agent that does market research, an AI-generated game that explains how hackathons work, and—a personal favorite—a tool that turns research papers into TikToks.

Gabriela Torres Vives, one of the organizers of Sundai Club, says the hackathons are growing, and the plan is to collaborate with companies on more ambitious projects in the future. “We value creative, fast-paced problem solving over traditional engineering processes,” she says. “Solving real-world problems with AI is meant to be fun, but all our ideas are meant to solve a real need and therefore could find potential customers.”

The AI projects produced by the Sundai Club are probably similar to many of those that different companies are spinning up, in that they are crude and have yet to turn into killer apps or business plans. But I think they show the potential of generative AI rapidly producing fascinating new ideas.

What’s more, while many news organizations are rightly worried about how generative AI might disrupt their trade—by scraping their content, auto-generating spam articles, and diverting search traffic—the hackathon that I joined suggests there could be plenty of valuable journalistic uses for the technology too.
