FIA Signs Sport for Nature Framework and Commits to Building a Nature-Positive Future for Motor Sport

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) is proud to announce that it has signed the Sports for Nature Framework today in Valencia, Spain.

The Framework is a global joint initiative of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy.

It aims to engage sports organisations all over the world in the conservation and restoration of nature and to leverage the transformative power of sports to drive effective change by 2030 and beyond.

FIA Senate President and Real Automóvil Club de España President Carmelo Sanz de Barros signed the Framework in Valencia, Spain, during the third FIA Sustainable Innovation Series event focusing on ‘Nature and Motor Sport’, in the presence of Programme Leader for Sports for Nature at IUCN Meredith Mc Curdy.

Carmelo Sanz de Barros declared: “By becoming a signatory to the Sports for Nature Framework, we are taking a step further in our commitment to sustainability. We encourage all the motor sport stakeholders to join us and take an active part in this important initiative. Together we hold the power to create lasting change and a better future for our sport and our planet.”

Programme Leader Meredith McCurdy further commented: “We are extremely pleased to welcome the FIA into the Framework and we look forward to working with the Federation to further integrate nature conservation into the world of motor sport.”

The signing aligns with the FIA’s commitment to adopting a comprehensive action plan to promote practices contributing to sustainable development, the preservation of natural habitats and the protection of biodiversity, for both its operations and its championships.

Also speaking at the event, FIA Sustainability and D&I Director Sara Mariani said: “Today, we are proud to make  a strong commitment to nature.  We aim to help build a positive future, halting and reversing its loss. Our organisation will take measures to protect and avoid damage to biodiversity, taking actions to restore and regenerate it.”
