‘It’s like watching my son leave home’: Tom Hardy on strange farewell to Venom

Tom Hardy has called Venom: The Last Dance “monumentally brilliant” ahead of its release.

Speaking to Sky News at the film’s UK premiere at BFI IMAX in London, the English actor says it feels strange parting ways with a character he thoroughly enjoys playing.

“It’s like watching my son leave home, which I’m looking forward to, in some aspects,” he joked.

“I don’t feel like it is over yet because we are still here. I don’t think it will really hit me until it’s quiet and I have a moment of reverie on my own.”

The actor has played the Marvel character in three films since 2018 and helped pen the script for the last two.

“There are lots of feelings, I wouldn’t say I’m emotional but I’m very proud of my business partner because I’ve seen her grow from us shopping [ideas] and us trying to work together to now delivering something which I think is monumentally brilliant.”

Filmmaker Kelly Marcel makes her directorial debut after writing the screenplays for each of the movies in the trilogy.

“It was such a privilege to be asked by Sony to do this last one and see it through from its inception to its finish and give Eddie and Venom the send-off they deserve,” she said.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Stephen Graham and Juno Temple also star in the third and final Venom film.

The Ted Lasso actor says she feels lucky to have seen Hardy perform a role so dear to his heart and says she is “blown away by how he has brought those characters to life”.

“His performance as Eddie and Venom in person is extraordinary.

“It’s a combination of physical comedy, of emotional depth, turmoil but also this inner voice of friendship.”

Venom: The Last Dance is in cinemas on Friday 25 October.
