Industry Working Group meets at 2024 FIA Motorsport Games

The 2024 FIA Motorsport Games is not only bringing together hundreds of athletes from across the global community of National Sporting Authorities (ASNs) to compete, but also serves as an opportunity for the FIA to host key motor sport stakeholders and set out key pathways for the future.

One such meeting that took place in Valencia, host city of this third edition of the Games, was the FIA Industry Working Group, comprised of the FIA’s Safety Department experts and representatives from leading companies within the motor sport and automotive sectors. The participants have volunteered to be part of the group that is tasked with the development of future FIA standards and regulations.

39 industry representatives attended the meeting in person at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, with a further 47 attending via videoconference, with three key areas of discussion tabled. Each subject carries specific relevance to the enterprises that are integral to the motor sport ecosystem as the group responsible for the manufacture and supply of key infrastructure and equipment.

In the area of research and vehicle safety, ongoing FIA studies into attenuators, headrest materials, and circuit debris fences were presented, while incoming standards for safety equipment and homologation were also discussed, specifically in the areas of karting light panels, safety harnesses, and racing nets.

New guidelines on circuit design, specifically with relation to mitigating issues arising from the abuse of track limits, and updates to karting circuit regulations were also discussed. This long-term approach is crucial in ensuring that motor sport continues to evolve at every level from grassroots to world championship level.

Finally the IWG received an update on recent FIA Safety communications, including the regulare ASN Safety Bulletins which, in a similar spirit to the IWG itself, are central to ensuring the global network of ASNs are kept up to date with the latest innovations and requirements.
