Man City collapse from two up as Brentford snatch late draw

The foundations around Man City crumbled again as Christian Norgaard’s late header halted their resurgence as they threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Brentford.

City had showed glimpses of their old selves as captain Kevin De Bruyne delivered a captain’s performance, capped by a typically perfect cross for Phil Foden’s close-range opener – before their late collapse showed again how far they have fallen this season.

They looked to have seen off Brentford’s threat when Foden notched another from inside the six-yard box to continue his own personal resurgence but their defensive frailty, which has seen them agree deals for Lens’ Abdukodir Khusanov and Palmeiras’ Vitor Reis soon came back to the fore.

Eight minutes from time, Nathan Ake missed a header to allow Mads Roerslev’s cross to reach Yoane Wissa, who swivelled smartly to notch his 11th Premier League goal of the season.

A repeat performance was to come as Brentford piled forward in added time as Norgaard beat Manuel Akanji to Keane Lewis-Potter’s delivery with a header Manuel Ortega could only palm into the corner to lift the roof off the Gtech Community Stadium.

Man City should have wrapped up victory before Brentford’s comeback with Savinho rattling the base of the post and Haaland nodding a free header straight at Mark Flekken, but the champions were made to pay for their continued shortcomings in both boxes by a Brentford side who were only too happy to leave them with a bloody nose once again.
