Ahead of the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, the FIA Road Safety Index expanded its impact, awarding nine companies the 3-star rating — the highest current recognition.
The new adopters – Amazon, BAT Italia, Folksam, Honda Motor Co., IKEA Supply Chain Operations, Scania, Shell, Uber, and Waymo – have all received the top rating in recognition of their efforts to enhance road safety across their operations. They join TotalEnergies, the first company to achieve this result in 2023, in committing to make road safety an integral part of their ESG reporting.
This progress aligns with the goals set out in the Stockholm Declaration of 2020, which launched the new Decade of Action for Road Safety, and called for greater private sector involvement in achieving global road safety targets.
It is in response to this call that the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) had launched the FIA Road Safety Index, with support of the FIA Foundation. The Index provides a structured framework for companies to measure and improve their road safety footprint and offers expert guidance on how to mitigate road safety risks across supply and value chains.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said, “Alongside our Members, we put safety at the heart of everything we do, both in motor sport and in mobility.
“But achieving zero road fatalities requires an even stronger commitment, especially from the private sector.
“By joining the FIA Road Safety Index, the major companies we have announced today have chosen to set a higher standard for a safer mobility culture around the world.
“The FIA will continue to engage with more companies on its Road Safety Index as reducing road traffic crashes and having safer communities is a goal that should unite us all.”
FIA Foundation Executive Director Saul Billingsley said, “The FIA Foundation actively supports the FIA Road Safety Index, which is a vital tool for measuring and improving occupational road safety performance and a concrete legacy from the Stockholm Ministerial in 2020. We encourage many more companies to get involved in this practical approach to driving down fatal and serious injuries in fleet operations.”
Looking ahead, the FIA Road Safety Index will evolve into a 5-star rating system in 2026, providing even greater incentives for companies to further enhance their road safety efforts.
The new signatories were announced earlier today during the “Challenge 2030: Achieving the Global Road Safety Goals” event organised by the FIA Foundation in Marrakech, Morocco, ahead of the 4thGlobal Ministerial Conference on Road Safety.
During the event, representatives from EuroNCAP, the International Road Union (IRU) and the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) expressed their support for the continued deployment of the Index. Delegates from 45 FIA Member Clubs also attended the event, and supported the announcement.
COMPANY HIGHLIGHTS
The companies that have achieved the 3-star rating through their commitment to road safety are recognised for a variety of key achievements:
Amazon: Amazon aims to be the global benchmark for safety excellence across all like industries and is committed to making roads safer for everyone. As one of the world’s largest logistics networks, Amazon harnesses innovation, technology, and mechanisms to raise the bar for safe operations. This commitment is shared by its employees and diverse network of partners, including small businesses and independent contractors.
BAT Italia: As a smaller corporation BAT Italia, part of BAT group, demonstrated that it can manage its road safety footprint with a high level of professionalism.
Folksam: The company demonstrated a mature approach to road traffic safety management and a solid plan to move forward with other activities across its wide set of operations.
Honda Motor Co., Ltd: Honda was the first car and motorcycle manufacturer to be assessed on the basis of the FIA Road Safety Index for both its supply chain and its products. Although Honda’s initial assessment was limited to its car and motorcycle production and sales operations in Japan – from assembly plants to resellers – the company is committed to expanding the scope to a global level.
IKEA Supply Chain Operations: As one of the pilot corporations in the development of the FIA Road Safety Index, IKEA Supply Chain Operations has developed into a high performer, recognised for its commitment and collection of road safety footprint data. In the IKEA Sustainability Report, published in January 2025, the company became one of the first retailers to publicly report the road safety footprint according to the FIA Road Safety Index.
Scania: As the first truck manufacturer to receive the rating, Scania conducted a very comprehensive value chain analysis, that could serve as a good example for other organisations in the sector.
Shell: The company achieved control over its safety footprint across +80% of its value and supply chains, representing a total estimate of 650-700 million km.
TotalEnergies: As the first ever company joining the programme, TotalEnergies demonstrated how a company can introduce the highest safety standard across all the countries where it operates, in addition to national legislation.
Uber: Building on its long-standing tradition of reporting on safety performance, Uber was given a top rating for its safety management practices and commitments across its entire global mobility operations, including powered two-wheel vehicles.
Waymo: Having established the world’s first fully autonomous ride-hail operations with over 5M public trips under the belt, Waymo has earned the highest possible score from the FIA Road Safety Index for its service.
