Organised in Marrakech from 17-20 February 2025 by the Kingdom of Morocco in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Global Ministerial Conference brought together leaders and experts from all over the world to review progress on the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, and to accelerate efforts towards achieving the SDG target of halving global road deaths and injuries by 2030.
Under the theme of “Commit to Life”, the Global Conference emphasised that road safety must be a global priority and that collaborative action is more crucial than ever.
This call was at the heart of the FIA and its Member Clubs’s engagement, as they attended the event with a significant delegation of over 70 delegates from more than 45 Clubs representing 42 countries from across the four Mobility Regions and the FIA’s wide community of road users worldwide.
Their week of action started with a side event organised by the FIA and the FIA Foundation, showcasing key road safety initiatives from Clubs and the vital role of private sector involvement, with panel discussions moderated by FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility Willem Groenewald and FIA Director of Road Safety and Global Advocacy Stefano Ammirati.
A highlight of the event was the session hosted by FIA General Manager Alberto Villarreal who announced nine new adopters of the FIA Road Safety Index, having achieved the 3-star rating of the Index, the highest rating possible. By giving companies the tool to make road safety a key part of their ESG reporting, the Index can be a game changer, ensuring they take concrete action to reduce deaths and injuries on the world’s roads.
Throughout the week, delegates engaged with key stakeholders — including governments, NGOs, local authorities, and the private sector — to share their everyday actions on the ground and build long-lasting collaborations.
The FIA also took the stage at the 4th Global Ministerial Conference. FIA Senate President Carmelo Sanz de Barros talked about building a safe mobility culture and fostering effective public-private partnerships while FIA Region II President Greig Craft higlighted the importance of using of high-quality helmets in tackling the road safety challenge. Better protection for mobility users was also at the heart of the intervention of Juan Carlos Botrán, the Automóvil Club de Guatemala Director of Mobility and Road Safety, who presented the results of a perception study carried out in the country as part of the Movernos Seguros programme, revealing strong public support for compulsory third-party insurance. FIA Head of Road Safety Luca Pascotto spotlighted how the FIA Road Safety Index is enabling stronger corporate engagement and contributing to raising corporate road safety standards.
Empowering action through knowledge was also a key focus of the week which concluded with the second training session of the Safe Mobility 4 All and 4 Life initiative, developed in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the FIA Foundation. The training enabled Member Clubs from Regions III and IV and their local authorities to build capacity and start collaboration of the definition of projects to ensure road safety commitments lead to meaningful actions.
